Sustainable Design Supplementary Planning Document

We are preparing a new planning design guide document, officially known as the ‘Sustainable Design Supplementary Planning Document'. The design guide will advise householders and developers on how to achieve better design standards and levels of sustainability for new schemes.
The Sustainable Design Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) will form part of the emerging County Durham Plan, which is being produced to replace existing District Local Plans.
It is important that the SPD will be user-friendly and provide clear guidance for developments including householder extensions, ‘rural’ developments, industrial estates and housing estates. To this end the SPD will be made up of three distinct sections that will guide developers through a ‘3 Step Approach’ to creating new developments.
We have prepared an ‘Issues Paper’ to set out the scope and focus of the SPD. You can view the Sustainable Design SPD Issues Paper online on this our interactive website. We need your views
You can send responses in a number of ways, but we would like to encourage you to submit your views online, via this interactive website. We believe this method will save you time and it will allow us to process and consider your comments more quickly. We hope that you will find the website quick and easy to use both now and to comment on documents in the future. Once your comments have been submitted they will be checked and added to the interactive website where you will also be able to see what comments have been made by others. To protect your privacy, all other information you provide when registering will not be open to public view.
